... And I kind of of want to reach through my screen to Dreamwidth, then through the portal to the Livejournal continuum, so that I can wrap my hands around your throat for a healthy squeeze* for pointing out such a disturbing truth to me.
In return (and guessing that your age is within a decade or so of mine), it (sorta) pleases me to point out that 1970 is a full god damned twenty years further from the present is 2050.
Mortality is a terrible, terrible, thing.

I think it's not unreasonable to say you can see the seeds of modern Who much more clearly in Survival than you can even in earlier Cartmel stuff - although we're not quite there yet the contrast between Rose and The Ultimate Foe is considerably more dramatic than I expect the contrast between Rose and what I expect we will see in 2024.
Although, given the current state of the world, one doesn't want to risk too much with crystal ball gazing.
From Davies' brilliant 90-second (or so) opening through the end of his third series, Rose's hero's journey was one of my favourite pieces of pop culture ever. Thanks for that pic!
You have me curious: Who are your favourite companions? My personal top three (in simple chronological order) would be Sarah-Jane, Ace, and Rose, and Leela — er, that's actually four, isn't it? — with shout-outs to Jamie MacCrimmon, though he was way before my time, and Captain Jack (of course!).

Modern Who my favourites are Donna and Bill, with a side order of Jack and Nardole.
Classic Who: In chronological order: Vicki, Polly, Jamie, Zoe, Liz, Jo, Sarah, Leela, Both Romanas, Nyssa (though mostly because I identified with her at the time, I don't think she stands up all that well in retrospect), Ace
Some of those are recent discoveries from the randomiser re-watch. What is really striking is how strong the companions were throughout the 1970s in spite of the sometimes odd ideas of the production team (I mean, they clearly designed Jo to be a silly ditzy blonde and yet she's so much more than that and so much of what she does actually undermines that stereotype). Then JNT comes along and until Cartmel appears no one seems to be really interested in the companions.
