As well as a pub whose loss is to be mourned, there was a bus terminal plus petrol station/car wash thing on the corner. This was abandoned, then occupied by squatters, then reclaimed and finally demolished. Then Lidl applied for planning permission.

We have been waiting for our Lidl to appear.

This weekend diggers appeared on the site.

We're quite W00t! about it. We'd like a Lidl within staggering distance...

Lidl also covet a derelict site in Ponteland. Local opinion is divided about its merits, fearing traffic congestion. Waitrose, understandably, are unhappy too. The two shops would face each other across the River Pont.

The locals, who tend towards the nimbyish, as locals generally do, have been surprisingly sanguine about this, as far as I can see. But then I suppose a Lidl is preferable to a mound of rubble and almost anything built there would generate traffic of some kind.

There are several independent supermarkets within a stone's throw though and I'm sure they are not happy. B. keeps insisting they have entirely different markets and might even benefit from the draw of a Lidl. While I can see you won't go to Lidl if you are buying rice by the kilo, or large volumes of spices, I think an awful lot of their basic trade in fruit, veg and meat will be in direct competition and Lidl's offering tends to be fresher and of better quality - I mean there is a reason why, when short of food, we often walk the extra 15 minutes up the road to our closest Lidl, rather than going to the independents.
