Well it seems LJ has changed all its login options which means among other things that

• I can't cross-post from DreamWidth, nor set up my account there so it can crosspost
  
• I can't export my journal with my preferred backup tool
  
• I can't use ljlogin on Firefox to switch between accounts
  

Notifications of comments on my blog posts on louisedennis have also stopped working again, though at the moment lsellersfic appears to be unaffected.

The long and short of which is that if I appear to be maintaining radio silence for a bit it's not personal its just that my posts ain't reaching you and I'm not getting your comments on anything that I actually do bother to post separately. I think if I comment on other people's posts and they respond I will still get the notification (I did last time this happened) but if I mysteriously stop responding even in those situations then its honestly not that I'm cold-shouldering or ignoring anyone.

Any yes I do know that this is entirely my fault for trying to use LJ via various third-party tools (well apart from the notifications thing), so please don't lecture me on how if I was a good, loyal, little LJ-only user it would all be all right and that my whinging is just self-entitled bullshit. I'm not telling anyone else where they should or should not be blogging, or what tools they should or should not be using, I'm just reporting why I may be going quiet for a while.

PS. Security problem yesterday was, apparently, a caching problem although LJ's account of it isn't entirely consistent with what users were reporting (nothing new there, and lots of potential explanations for the inconsistencies).

Just noticed someone else on my flist crossposting from Dreamwidth - might be worth checking if they have fixed that already?

Although it's not the thing that has got people howling most, breaking ljlogin (etc) strikes me as a particularly bad oversight from the commercial viewpoint as it seems liable to annoy active users who are contributing lots of valuable public content that draws in traffic and keeps the userbase growing, thus going direct to the bottom line.

I know Wordpress updates all the time without any regard to plugin authors, but then Wordpress has thousands and thousands of plugins and is just a different sort of beast.

Re comment notification, apologies if this is stupidly obvious, but are both accounts sending to the same email address? It seems so odd that one would be dropping messages in that way and not the other one: I get people reporting this sort of thing a lot, and usually I find that although whatever script it is is triggering an email send, it's amazingly common for mailservers to just eat or bounce emails that admit they are from a script rather than from a local email client.

Notifications are back. It is very odd. Both accounts go to the same address, last time I was getting notifications when someone replied to a comment I left on someone else's post but getting no notifications for anything that happened on my own posts. Yesterday I was getting no notifications on anything.

Meanwhile my other account was fine.

I suppose there's an outside chance there's a dotty spam filter somewhere between LJ and my inbox, but I have a feeling the notifications weren't showing up in my LJ inbox either last time around. I'll confess I haven't checked this time.

It must be said I was comparing a bit to Firefox which does advertise in advance what is going to be changing - but then the plugins are one of Firefox's selling points and it has a lot more resources than LJ. Even so I think most of my irritation is that no warning was given to the various third party developers.

That said, the fact that whatever it is they have done with login cookies means that Firefox can't "remember" that you are logged in is also pretty poor. Safari is managing fine, but breaking Firefox with your upgrade isn't a clever move.

Drilling down into the DreamWidth crossposting thing has revealed that there were two ways to set up crossposting. One involved DreamWidth saving your password and that still works, but I was using an option which required me to type my password in afresh for each crosspost and that is broken, as is the option to set up "save the password".

DreamWidth say they are giving it a few days to settle down because LJ often make tweaks for a few days after a realease and then they will work on rolling out a fix for crossposting as soon as possible.

You are finding Firefox can't remember you? That's odd, I'm on Firefox on this machine too, just tried logging in and out, terminating all sessions, reboot... it only logs me out if I tell it to, otherwise I stay logged in...

I do have Firefox's Livejournal Addons installed on this copy of FF, I wonder if that is the difference or if it is related to the notification issue and your account is in a different (buggy!) cluster or something? Strange.

It was the lsellersfic account I was having the remembering problem with (I haven't even tried with this account since LJ login broke, I'm just running it through Safari). So it's definitely not related to the notifications issue.

I wonder if its some wierd interaction with ljlogin. I saw several people complaining that Firefox couldn't remember them in one of the support posts relating to the last release which is why I was assuming it was related to the cookie issue but of course it could easily only be affecting people with ljlogin installed. I should maybe try uninstalling ljlogin and clearing out all cookies and passwords and see if the problem clears itself up.

Though not until after I've made a Maid Marion costume, carved a pumpkin and cooked Sunday dinner...
