It was the

lsellersfic account I was having the remembering problem with (I haven't even tried with this account since LJ login broke, I'm just running it through Safari). So it's definitely not related to the notifications issue.

I wonder if its some wierd interaction with ljlogin. I saw several people complaining that Firefox couldn't remember them in one of the support posts relating to the last release which is why I was assuming it was related to the cookie issue but of course it could easily only be affecting people with ljlogin installed. I should maybe try uninstalling ljlogin and clearing out all cookies and passwords and see if the problem clears itself up.

Though not until after I've made a Maid Marion costume, carved a pumpkin and cooked Sunday dinner...
