It must be said I was comparing a bit to Firefox which does advertise in advance what is going to be changing - but then the plugins are one of Firefox's selling points and it has a lot more resources than LJ. Even so I think most of my irritation is that no warning was given to the various third party developers.

That said, the fact that whatever it is they have done with login cookies means that Firefox can't "remember" that you are logged in is also pretty poor. Safari is managing fine, but breaking Firefox with your upgrade isn't a clever move.

Drilling down into the DreamWidth crossposting thing has revealed that there were two ways to set up crossposting. One involved DreamWidth saving your password and that still works, but I was using an option which required me to type my password in afresh for each crosspost and that is broken, as is the option to set up "save the password".

DreamWidth say they are giving it a few days to settle down because LJ often make tweaks for a few days after a realease and then they will work on rolling out a fix for crossposting as soon as possible.
