So, yes, on the Sunday in New Zealand I went to Hobbiton. In fact I took a guided minibus trip that also included some caves with glow-worms in them which, while pretty, didn't quite live up to the hype and wouldn't allow photos.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect at Hobbiton - it is a movie set after all, but actually - as both the guide on the minibus and the one he handed us over to once we got there explained - the set used for Lord of the Rings had been completely removed at the end of filming. However, over the subsequent years the farm started making a lot of money from driving fans up to the empty field where the set had been, so when The Hobbit movies came round they proposed that the film build everything for real and then operate it in an ongoing fashion as a tourist attraction. This is what is there today and it's pretty impressive. You can't go in to most of the hobbit holes, but I gathered they all had an actual room behind the door (mostly used for storage).

To be honest, I have a lot of photos of misc hobbit holes so I've bunged them all into the directory which I use for random Friday pictures, so you can see them as they pop out amid all the castles, fossils and random neolithic stones. Even so, and with some strategic weeding, there are a lot of photos.

Me standing next to a stature of Gandalf.
This is the shop which, if you are not a purchaser of models, was honestly a little disappointing.

Me standing next to a Hobbiton sign.

A noticeboard - one notice advertises Sackville Apples.

The Hobbiton market garden. A large tree in the background.
That prominent tree is the Party Tree.

An arched window peeping out of the grass, next to a fenced in garden and a chimney on top of the rise.

A selfie of me in sunglasses in front of a hobbit hole with a blue door.
I think this is the Sackville-Baggins's

A small rise containing two hobbit holes with red doors. Washing is on a line on top of the line in between the chimneys. Vegetable gardens in front.

A selfie of me in front of a hobbit hole with a light blue door.

A hobbit hole with a yellow door. There is a bench in the front garden and a work bench to one side next to a log pile.

A hobbit hole set into a hillside with many chimneys and a washing line. Runner beans (of similar) in front.

A view across aa pond to a hillside dotted with chimnies.

Some kind of frame for climbing plants in front of a a hobbit hole set into a hill with a second hobbit hole visible higher up the hill.
That hobbit hole at the top is Bag End.

A photo of a hobbit hole somewhat marred by a sunbeam. Next to the door can just been seen a being with two jars on it and a smoker. A beehive to one side.
Each hobbit hole was supposed to have hints outside as to the interests of the occupants. This one is a beekeeper.

A table with jars of honey and honey comb on it
... and here are their wares.

A view across a view to a hobbit hole with a yellow door.

A view down a hill showing gardens, and hobbit holes and bag end.
That tree above Bag End is, apparently, the only fake tree in the place. Peter Jackson wanted a tree above Bilbo's home and there wasn't one, so one was built.

The party tree with the Green Dragon beyond
My phone camera struggling with the Zoom a bit here, but that building is The Green Dragon.

Me standing in the doorway of a hobbit hole with a red door.
This was the photo opportunity hobbit hole.

Me standing in the doorway of a hobbit hole with a red door.

A wide view the the Party in the middle and lake and Green Dragon to the right.

A window in a hillside. Chimney above.
One of the Bag End windows.

Me standing next to a gate that says No Admittance except on party business. The front of Bag End is behind me.

A bench with a book and a pipe on it, some kind of bird house behind and a window in the hill beyond that.
The bench where Bilbo and Gandalf sat blowing smoke rings.

The geen door of Bag End with a pumpkin to one side.
Bag End.

The door to Bag End on the left, showing its windows to the right.

A hobbit hole with a yellow door.
If I understood correctly this is the Gamgee dwelling.

A field with seesaws and a swing and the Party Tree beyond.
The party field.

New this year, apparently, were two furnished hobbit holes (tour groups got split in two and you only saw one, but we were assured both were the same). We were told we could touch or pick up anything not nailed down (unsurprisingly, most things were nailed down).

A living room with a curved ceiling with wooden beams. Wooden chairs and tables and a fire place.

A nook containing a writing desk and chair. Above the desk are shelves crammed with books and scrolls.

A view through an arched doorway into a bed room.

Wooden bunk beds with a ladder. Colourful patchwork quilts and pillow. A dress hangs up to one side.

Puppets of a lady mouse and a boy.
These made me thing of [personal profile] ladyofastolat

An arched wooden door with a motif of a branch and two birds.

A view into a water closet with a wooden box-like loo and stone basin.

A bathroom with green walls and a copper freestanding bath.

A stone wash basin with a little circular mirror mounted in an alcove above it. Decorative plasterwork either side shows pond leaves a frog and rushes.

A double bed with a green cover and a cradle hanging from the ceiling next to it.

Circular walls to a twisting corridor.

A tree painted on the wall with miniatures placed on it an labelled.
I'm not sure if you can tell, but this is the Proudfoot family tree. Presumably it was the Proudfoot (Proudfeet?) house.

A model hobbit hole
A Doll's Hobbit Hole!

A model hobbit hole showing a lit interior containing small chairs and a table.

A kitchen with a range cooker set into an arch. An island in front is loaded with pots and bowls.

A view into a study with a high-backed chair before a desk. A bookshelf laden with scrolls to one side.

The Shire Field Guide Mushrooms. Several model mushrooms with labels such as tastes better than it looks.

A view of two corridors with arched ceilings. One has hanging brooms. The post between them has curved branches decorating it.

A well-stocked larder with food and barrels.

A dining table with four chairs, sideboard and window seat.

A view through a diamond window showing a wooden fence and the Green Dragon beyond.

A newspaper. Headlines announce a Pie-Baking Contest and Breezy Mischief Afoot.
You could turn the pages of this, but it was glued to the table.

A recipe book showing recipes for Ma Grub's Best Apple Pie and Apple and Myrtle-Berry Pie

A view into a small room with an brick arch behind which a bucket on a rope hangs over a hole.
An indoor well?

View across the water to the Green Dragon.

A thatched cottage raised on a stone base above the lake. A mill wheel is on one side below the cottage next to a jetty.
I was expecting the Miller's house to be uglier, all things considered, but perhaps this is before or after Sandyman moved into a house built by Sharkey's Men.

A courtyard full of tourists (and guides). A long low thatched building with arched doors and round windows beyond.
It was clearly going to be impossible to get a shot of The Green Dragon without modern people in the way.

A carved arched entrance to the Green Dragon.

A blue pottery mug on a table. Barrels beyond.
We got a complementary beer in The Green Dragon. A choice of a stout, a pale ale, a cider or ginger beer. I went for the pale ale which was inoffensive. Here it is posed in front of some supplies.

A blue pottery mug on a table. A banner beyond reads. Oh you can search far and wide. You can drink the whole town dry. But you'll never find a beer so brown as the one we drink in our home town. You can drink you fancy ales. You can drink them by the flagon. But the only brew for the brave and true... comes from the Green Dragon.

A view across the lake to Hobbiton.

A view of the bridge and the middle by the Lake. Mill wheel can't be seen.

Me with my ale. The lake and Hobbiton in the background.

Two black eels in the water.
Our guide was, frankly, much more interested in wildlife than hobbits and so was eager to point out the eels in the lake.

So many cool photos! As someone who's never seen the movies (as a long-time book fan from prehistory I refuse to sully my inner vision of Middle-Earth :-) I'm pleasantly suprised by how nice the hobbit holes look inside. Very cosy! The doll hobbit hole was a particularly nice touch.

Thank you for sharing all of these. It is all so green! I was having lots of fun looking at the veggie patches and trying to identify the plants.

Aw, great photos! The furnished Hobbit hole looks amazing, and it all looks (unsurprisingly) so pretty round there!
