purplecat: A Crocheted Afghan Square Blanket (General:Crochet)
[personal profile] purplecat

A blanket made from 24 large crocheted squares on a double bed

I don't seem to have posted a photo of the 2022 crochet blanket. That year I didn't pick a colour theme but instead resolved to use up leftover yarn. This effort still left a lot of yarn in the house so last year I did something similar, only I did purchase new yarn in three neutralish colours in the hopes of adding some unity to the effect. I'm pleased with the outcome, though wish I'd selected three brown colours rather than two browns and a bluish grey. There is still a lot of leftover yarn, mind you. This year I've picked one pale neutral colour to go into every square and will focus on "stash-busting" for the rest.

It was late January before I finished this blanket mind - which means I'm already two squares behind on the 2024 effort!! For those interested, details of the annual Moogly Cal can be found here.

I love the look of the texture of that type of crochet. Always have. Just gorgeous.

Nice work! All my children are very crafty, I might send them a picture of your blanket as a suggestion of what to do with all the 'spare' yarn...

That can happen, but doesn't always. It depends on the size and diversity of your stash. The bigger the stash, the easier it is to pick a theme -- spring pastels, autumn colors, shades of gray with pink, shades of brown with lime green, ombre, rainbow, etc.

My grandmother had no eye for color and would match quilt parts randomly. I think I was about two when she realized that I'm great at color matching. She'd give me a stack of parts -- she often did applique quilts of leaves or cats or whatever -- and I would pick embroidery floss that that either matched (a lighter or darker shade) or contrasted (like yellow on red).

Cool colors:

Mostly warm tones:

Muted colors:

Almost rainbow:

As much as I love bohemian things with all the colors thrown together at random, I also love things with more of a design in the colors.

>> But the reason I have so much stash was all the colour themed blankets I made previously!! <<

In that case, random selection would give you something different to play with.

>> I mean I get the point that if I'd had even more stash then I could have colour themed it more - but if I had that much stash then the stash would be even more of a problem than it is. Maybe its a UK/US thing - storage space is not cheap here.<<

Depends where you are in the United States. There are large areas with almost nobody living there, and plenty of small towns where storage is abundant. I'm in the Midwest, and yes, storage is often affordable here.

But the more popular cities have gotten so expensive that only rich people can afford to live there, and poor people can't afford to drive in to work for the wages on offer. Since the rich have forgotten about manor housing with servants' rooms, now they're whining about not being able to get people to scrub their toilets. I have zero sympathy.
