While I was doing my PhD, I divided my spare time pretty much between roleplaying and Gilbert and Sullivan.

I joined the Edinburgh University Savoy Opera group on something of a whim, and the first production I was involved in was The Mikado, with a remarkable director called Fraser Grant (though I've no idea what happened to him once he graduated). He expected, and extracted, a much higher standard of performance from us than any other amateur director I've worked with - although a certain amount of shouting was involved. The Mikado was the only production I was in that ever got reviewed in a national newspaper (outside of the Fringe, at any rate, which doesn't really count since you only need to stand around on the Royal Mile during the fringe to get a review in a national newspaper). That said, the review itself, reproduced below, is a little wierd. I well remember Yum-Yum, on reading it, complaining "Koko is brilliant, Nanki-Poo is puppyish and I'm... American?"

On the left (or possibly on top) you have Japanese schoolgirls, Scottish style. I'm the one standing directly behind the lass who is kneeling down. On the right (or possibly below) you have my two best friends in the cast.
