Q7. What would make you leave a fandom, or prevent you from getting into it in the first place?

I feel one needs to define fandom first but I suppose I'll treat it as actually interacting with other fans in some way as opposed to reading fic/books/magazines/collecting stuff and so on.

I guess it would have to be small - Doctor Who fandom is so large that even if I'm frustrated with one bit of it, I can find another where I feel well-served (I mean, I'm barely aware of the "not my Doctor" crowd even though I gather there are a lot of them out there). So it would need to be a small fandom that had become super-fractious or "there is only one true way to appreciate this thing" or just odd in some other way and even then I'd probably read the fic - I mean I read a lot of Sherlock fic back in the day but engaged with the fandom only so far as to eat popcorn while things got ever stranger (and tbh, Sherlock fandom was large enough, I bet I could have found a not completely crazy bit of it if I'd gone looking).

The "Apple Tree Yard is the secret fourth episode" thing is the weirdest I can remember in any fandom.

I get the impression that some very weird stuff went down in Harry Potter fandom (Snape's wives?) but was less pervasive than the secret fourth episode thing which seemed to be everywhere.

I've drifted out of Doctor Who fandom over the years, initially because I thought I was being too negative in the later RTD era, then I guess because I ran out of free time with my MA and work when I got back into the programme under Steven Moffat. I did try to get into Twitter fandom more recently, but I found it too political (or too hard to avoid a political minority), and realised that I seem to respond to Doctor Who differently to a lot of current fans, as well as Twitter being a huge time sink.

I get a bit of politics - though mostly, I think, because I follow Jonn Elledge who I've known since back in the secret Doctor Who mailing list days. But most of the Doctor Who stuff seems pretty, well, not exactly squee but celebratory, at least. There'a nice account following production day by day through the 1980s, and pipmadely doing silly short videos, and one which is about voting on Doctor Who book covers. Politics pops up occasionally, but not often.
