I've no idea how I acquired this. Did I send off for it? Was I given it? Is it a real first day cover or some kind of mechandizing wheeze from these Covercraft people?

Merchandising wheeze, I think, rather than a Royal Mail issued one, as there was no issu of Doctor Who commemorative stamps in 1988.

The stamp is obviously some kind of science or astronomy set, though of course stranger things have happened than a Dr Who themed first day cover being paired with astronomy stamps...

Looks like they've got hold of a stock of astronomy-related stamps (that one is related to Isaac Newton) and used them for this since they missed the first day cover date for the original issue of the stamps.

I thought the Isaac Newton stamp was probably a mark against it - but, of course, stranger things happened in the 1980s than a Dr Who themed first day cover being used to release a vaguely astronomy related stamp set.
