So there is an AFI 100 greatest movies meme doing the rounds (you know the "bold those you've seen" type). Anyway this is on the list and I realised that the sum total of my memories of the movie are:

a) It has donkeys in it
b) And possibly people undone by their own greed
c) I think I watched it in a Colorado motel room with [livejournal.com profile] adaese after (or possibly before) a somewhat tiresome search for somewhere to eat - given we were in Colarado and on foot.

I'm wondering if she recalls this at all, and if she remembers any more about the movie than I do!

I shall point [livejournal.com profile] adaese in the direction of this post directly she has finished doing things with partridges.

ETA: And she says that she has a vague memory of the film, but couldn't have told you that it was in Colorado. I said that, with a title like that, I would have thought the film would be set further south than that; at which point, I got belaboured about the head.

As Wellinghall says, only very vague memories. When I saw the meme going round, I thought "know the title, but couldn't tell you anything about it". I'm now trying to remember if it's the one where there might or might not be a Gila Monster under a rock. But I don't even remember the donkeys clearly.

Perhaps there were more interesting things to remember about that holiday (such as lions)?

Yes! to donkeys, and gila-monsters, and people undone by their own greed. And dodgy Mexican bandits pretending to be police ("We don't need no stinkin' badges!"). And Bogart as a mean, unsympathetic loner ("Nobody puts one over on Fred C. Dobbs"). And the director's dad as a fast-talking, indefatigable, elderly miner.

Great, great, movie.

Ah you beat me to the "Steenken' Badges" line. One of the great lines of cinema history. IMHO, this movie definitely deserves its place on a list of 100 greatest Holly wood movies. Bogey's one of those with a bunch of must-see movies to his name: Casablanca, African Queen and TotSM all belong on the list.

I rather think they are mules, not donkeys, though it is a long time since I saw it.
