In the early days of Doctor Who Magazine, when it was Doctor Who Weekly, The Star Beast featured Beep, the Meep, rescued by two school children one of whom, Sharon Davies, is generally considered to be the Doctor's first black companion in any media

A tearful Meep relates his story to the Fourth Doctor. In panel one the Meep, a round white furry creature with large ears about half the height of a person is seen from the back talking to the Fourth Doctor who asks `Perhaps you can explain why the other aliens are after you? You haven't done something... naughty?' to which the meep replies `Oh, No Doctor!'. In the next panel (The Meep tells his story...) we have a close up of the Meep's face with large tearful eyes: `One day, One black day, the Wrarth warrior war-ships landed on my little planet... we offered them the Paw of Friendship but they offered us only... DEATH!'. In the third panel the Meep is wiping its nose on the Doctor's scarf `The warriors destroyed Everything! They did terrible things to my people... things I don't like to talk about tin from of the children. >Snuffle<'. The two children, a blonde white boy and a black girl in green blazers stand at the front of the panel the boy says `Cor! Torture and that...?'

But all is not as its seems

Meanwhile though the Meep must endure the semblance of being cute and harmless

Before too long however

Suddenly, the Meep pulls a gun from a Hidden Pouch! A close of of the meep firing a gun with sharp teeth and eyes that now look quite aggressive. It is saying `Meep! Meep!'

I didn’t read this when originally printed, but read it in the graphic novel version. Much fun. I should probably dig it out again.

Big Finish have done an audio version of this, along with Iron Legion. I haven’t heard it though, so don’t know what Beep sounds like.

I have this in the Classic Comics reprint which I suspect has been coloured after the fact. I didn't start getting DWM until issue 64 so I read none of the fourth Doctor stories first time around.

Ahhh... I still have a love for this kind of story making.

I'd say the DWM strip still has flashes of this kind of thing though it tends to take itself a bit more seriously these days.

Fairly predictably - the Meep is carted off to prison. There are a number of sequels in various media according to the Tardis Wiki some of which I must have read since they are in the comic, but which I don't recall.

The one where the eighth Doctor and Beep crash land on a parallel universe 1970s BBC, and the day is saved by eccentric actor Tom Baker after the Doctor is hypnotised is fairly amusing with lots of 70s TV in-jokes.

It's surprising how well The Star Beast evokes a working class Northern milieu that the original series generally didn't visit. Great story.

The original series is paroquial not only by being produced and filmed in the UK, but by the constraints and difficulties of travelling any real distance from London. It's easy to forget that sometimes (especially, I suppose, since much UK TV of the time had the same problem). I am quite interested, tbh, about the constraints involved in basing the current series companions in Sheffield while continuing to film from Cardiff - but I suppose since they regularly fly to South Africa for several weeks to do big blocks of filming the way the budgets work is very different and Sheffield is probably a lot more straightforward than South Africa is...
