The Blood Service's Facebook feed has been posting increasingly dramatic pleas that it will be the Olympics any day now, and people will be bleeding, uncontrollably, all over London and the provinces and what will the Blood Service do?????* so I thought I had better toddle along to the local donor centre and do my bit especially since, what with one thing and another, it is over six months since I last gave blood. Given the histrionic messages I was somewhat surprised to find that they only had one bed available today, however I had serendipitously turned up for the one unbooked slot so that was OK.

Last time I attempted to give blood the vein in my arm stubbornly refused to oblige with the whole "bleed on demand" concept. As a result, today we all stared at my arms dubiously and discussed the possible location of alternative veins. It always mildly disconcerts me when medical professionals insist on consulting me about this kind of thing. Can't they just look at my arms and pick something? In the end we agreed on a "side vein" in my right arm which briefly flirted with not bleeding on demand until a senior nurse was summoned to give it a Very Hard Stare, at which point it promptly started bleeding sensibly again.

I'm sure you are all relieved to know that I have, no doubt single-handedly, averted Crisis at the Olympics.

*Those of you who may be tempted by this to sign up for the Facebook feed for a laugh should note that a certain amount of exaggeration is taking place here for comic effect.

I am very impressed with anyone who gives blood (and quite impressed with myself for reading your post right through, without feeling more than a bit queasy!) I still couldn't give blood, though; and it might not be a good idea even if my brain would let me; as I have asked about organ donation, but the experts can't agree on whether it would be A Good Thing.

I did it enough to get a special bronze(ish) pin award, but now they won't let me.

There probably are some bits of me that work properly (although right now I'm struggling to think of any). They can't be guaranteed to keep on working, though.

LOL!!! It always amazes me how hard it is to get an appointment (an appointment?! I ask you!) to give blood.
I feel it is a Good Thing that your blood tends towards staying in your body. Mine has the same blessed tendency. Keep squeezing the squeezy thing to coax it out, only a minute until the deadline or the WHOLE BAG IS WASTED AND LONDON WILL DIE *nod*

Hahha, yes. It's not supposed to be normal practice now, but it's the only way my blood will come out :p
My Dad was hoping to make 100 donations before he pegs it, but he now has white coat syndrome high blood pressure so they won't let him give much any more - he has to be so right on the day :( His grand life total will probably be 90 or so, still not bad.

Hee - that deserves my 'grand' icon.

As a citizen of one of the Commonwealth countries, I thank you for your thoughtful donation and for the fun slant on it all

Fuck. Reading this comment made me realise I forgot to go to my bleeding appointment the other week. Now the bit where you said provinces is less funny.

Karmic retribution will be me dying of blood loss at any point in my life.

Well, that thing I was telling you about lost steam after one chapter. So I'm up for anything that involves me being told what to write and when to write it. Preferably with lists.
