Sometimes I see a DWM cover and wonder about the chain of reasoning that made someone think this, of all the images available, was the one most likely to make some random member of the general public pick the magazine up off the stand. Then I'm slightly charmed that either someone thought this, or someone felt that the cover image need only appeal to die hard fans.

Absolutely - what self-respecting member of the British public could walk past such fine beards?

To be honest, I think there came a time in the 90s when DWM appealed only to die-hard fans, but because they sold almost literally over single copy they printed, so well did they know the market, the publishers didn't actually care.

Yes, but this is from 1983 when then show still saw itself as, at least to some extent, part of the cultural fabric of the country and the Magazine had not yet really fallen into fan control.

I suppose it's from a period when the chief feature writer determined a lot of the content without the editor bring especially involved. Alan McKenzie was more preoccupied with Starburst and largely signed off on Richard Landen's plans in advance, I think, concentrating on tidying the text up afterwards.
