It occurs to me that there is a reading of Doctor Who which suggests the Doctor has always rather wanted to be a woman.

Jon's love of comedy couldn't help showing up! LOL! Even in one of the most serious roles he ever had.

I think there's a good argument to be made that they rapidly abandoned this kind of thing. There's a lot of overt comedy in the Doctor's scenes in the hospital in Spearhead from Space but we see less and less of it thereafter, even in that story.

EDIT: Except this is from The Green Death so I'm talking nonsense!

Though one could reasonably argue that sequences like this were rapidly abandoned as the production crew became more certain of the tone they were aiming for.
