I'm incredibly impressed that I can download this via iTunes. The quality of the download is much better than you would get from many *ahem* alternative means and as a bonus it's perfectly legal, quick and simple.

Primeval has come up with a lot worse season openers than this one. It may be because this was filmed back-to-back with season 4 and there was less pressure to (re)introduce characters, but it managed to be pacey and have a reasonable amount of (for Primeval) not too ridiculous plot. I was irritated by the sub-plot involving Lester and the knighthood but I suspect that was more because it both contradicted fandom's characterisation of Lester and basically relied on the comedy of embarrassment (which I loathe) than because it was inherently flawed in any way (beyond, you know, it is extremely unlikely that you would conduct an interview like that without first establishing that everyone was talking about the same person, but that's just standard Primeval levels of silliness).

I remain deeply confused about what the script editor thinks is going on with Abby and Connor. Despite the far greater strains placed upon them by Burton's ultra-secret shenanigans we are getting a glimpse of a much more believable and functional relationship, as we did in the last episode of season 4 and I'm just left puzzled by what the apparent estrangement for the rest of last season was supposed to be about. I much prefer them like this but I feel the characters continue to suffer from very uneven writing. April just made me roll my eyes. I'm not even going to dignify the femme fatale disguised as a geek stereotype with any analysis.

However the interactions between Matt and Abby and Connor and Abby were nice. The action sequences were well put together and not too reminiscent of previous monster encounters on the show. I'm even beginning to warm to Jess, especially in the way she interacts with Lester. All in all I thought this a promising start.

My only problem with downloading it from iTunes is it's iTunes-proprietary and iTunes takes over your damn computer. If it were on Amazon (Amazon doesn't have series 5, probably because they go off BBCA, which doesn't have s5 yet), I'd be on it that way in a minute. And I have since they were released got the legal copies of s1-s4, so that the actors get paid (I do this with a lot of series, actually). But until iTunes' programming gets a lot more under control, I will not give Apple money.

...I didn't know that about Amazon. Wonder if B/N has digital downloads.

No, iTunes' problem on PC is it is complete bloatware. You install iTunes and it installs *and keeps running* about five or six other programs. I really don't need the service installed and running at all times that lets it connect to other iTunes machines, yet if you uninstall it, iTunes panics whenever it upgrades.

now, with on-topic

I'm having the same wonder about the writers, but I'm two eps ahead of you.

April annoys the hell out of me, and I adore Abby calling Matt on his distrust. There's hope for the team, yet!
