Reading: Her Smoke Rises up Forever, a collection of James Tiptree Jr short stories. It must be said, while I appreciate the prose I'm finding a lot of them quite dated and weirdly gender essentialist (which may just be dated attitudes made more obvious since so many of them have female protagonists or are specifically about male violence against women). It's also kind of depressing that in the vast majority of them the main protagonist dies at the end.

Listening: The

otpodcast episode on Fusion AUs. The podcast was recommended to me by

dunderklumpen and it gets definite points for being a mostly interesting discussion of fanfic. But I do get a bit of a disconnect every time they refer to shows from the 1990s as "really old" fandoms.

Watching: We've abruptly come to the end of seasons1 of both Killjoys and The Expanse on Netflix. So we're back with Doctor Who and The Avengers.

Yeah, I had the feeling that Tiptree's despair about gender came out as essentialism -- that writing an escape or alternative seemed like too good to hope for, somehow.

That could be it. Reading her stories brings on a strange sense of cognitive dissonance in that she's so clearly concerned about the female experience (particularly of male violence) and the female viewpoint and yet so much of it does read like a male writer doing the "Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars" thing. Almost more so, I'm not sure that her male characters are representative of "all men" in the way they often purport to be, any more than her female character are somehow representative of "all women". Both genders, in her works, seem to be trapped by stereotype.

They are beautifully written and passionately argued and yet all the character feel like straw (wo)men to me.
