Article in the Daily Mail (oh! the embarrassment)

As far as I can work out, one of B's postdoc's took a video of a walking Gorilla as part of a project on modelling locomotion. B. then showed it to some people making a documentary on Bigfoot who asked if they could use it. B said they needed to ask the zoo for permission first (the original permission for filming was for scientific use only). The zoo asked if they could use it too and put it on their YouTube feed where it suddenly became surprisingly popular and attracted the attention of such prestigious publications (*ahem*) as the Daily Mail.

B. is happy anyway, Daily Mail notwithstanding.

That's fantastic!! LOL. Look at him go *veg*

LOL, I was considering a trip to Port Lympne after we'd been to the SFX Weekender, but it's a bit pricey for only having half a day in cold February :D But I would have loved to go. I have mixed feelings about wildlife parks, of course, but how can you resist the stars of Roar! ?
Port Lympne and Howletts ftw *g*
XD

You can easily spend a whole day at Port Lympne, and there is also some interesting architecture and, in particular, artwork.

When I was last there we were early and all the wolves were howling. It was a stunning experience...

Oh wow! I want to go even more now.
We wouldn't have been able to have a whole day, so it seems too expensive to try.
One day, I hope!! Thanks :D

There's a lot to be said for that, and I don't know just how essential all the 'conservation' work they do is, but a well-run place surely has a decent role somehow. Education has to be well worth it. Plus I love going! LOL.

I saw the footage of Ambam on the TV news, LOL.

I have been resisting posting the comment 'walking like that that he looks exactly like our neighbour Colin!' on the grounds that I *know* across the land, millions of people are all saying the same thing. In the same way that if you stand outside a wildcat enclosure, you will hear person after person going 'Hey! He looks just like Tibbles!' and chimpanzee enclosures are constantly surrounded by people copying the apes.

But I can no longer resist.

Peoplewatching by the chimp enclosure at Chester Zoo made me think that chimp anthropologists would get the oddest ideas.

"This Ooo!Oo! Oo! noise seems to come up a lot"

"Yes, and I notice they usually do that strange arm motion at the same time. Doesn't seem to be related to food or mating".

"It could have ritual significance?"

"It seems very likely"

*chimp anthropologists nod sagely and make notes in poo smeared on the wall*
