Possibly, though it's less aethetically pleasing than the Stephen/Nick rift leading to Stephen explicitly making the opposite choice, even though he knows Helen is only making the offer to upset Nick. I also think they need Nick in the modern day, dramatically, as the fixed point lead character whereas Stephen could switch to guest start status with Helen. Doesn't stop Nick going anomaly tripping between seasons though.
I also assume they are setting up an explicit dilemma. The opportunity to "put history right" will come after a point when Nick (and the viewer) have to recognise Jenny as a person in their own right. The dilemma then becomes which one to save: Jenny or Claudia, and whether anyone has the right to make such decisions.
