purplecat: The Tardis against a sunset (or possibly sunrise) (Doctor Who)

Sarah Jane maintains the Dr Who tradition of companions making dubious fashion choices.

I was first amused and then subsequently puzzled by the copyright notice under the picture. This is, after all, a publicity still created with the intention that it would be copied and published by other people.

At any rate, I'm assuming that at this point in the game I'm a) too small a fry a b) people distributing publicity images on the Internet is too common a thing for the BBC to come after me, but I suppose we shall see.

Oh dear, that was one of her less inspired costumes.

What do you think was the worst companion costume ever? Not counting over-the-top SF ones, I'd pick Peri's in "The Two Doctors" - floral bikini top and orange shorts, topped off with incongruously formal white kitten-heeled shoes, and a silver cropped puffa jacket with an unspeakably cheap-looking and ugly "metallic" finish that made it look exactly like a puddle of petrol on tarmac.

Oh yes, I refreshed my memory on Google Images and agree about how awful it looks. Makes her look washed out. And, as you say, surely if it was meant to be sexy it would lift her bosom up instead of squashing it down?

There are a few anecdotes about it needing constant embarassing adjustment during recording as well.

I wonder if it was meant as a photo they sent out to letter writers who requested an autograph? So they could make copies, but it was only ever intended to be kept by the person receiving it, rather than the media?

Either way, she's so pretty.

That was spectacularly bad - the gloves (if that what they are) are especially awful, it looks like she has a gangrenous finger or something.

The BBC are a menace when it comes to publicity pix. I wanted to use a spread from SFX magazine in a book. SFX were very happy for it to be used, but pointed out one of the pix was a BBC one and I'd need permission from them. The BBC refused point-blank, despite it being a legit academic publisher. A colleague had similar problems, and ended up having to change the book's related website every six months to comply with strict conditions.
