A cowl appears to be scarf with its ends stitched together. I'm not sure a cowl is as useful as a scarf, but I liked the look of the pattern so I made it anyway.

I have a horrible feeling that crochet leads inevitably to a large collection of shawls and scarfs of various descriptions.

I normally more need protection for my ears than my face, and find that cowls can be settled to do that better.

Yes, I think my issue is that I most need protection for my throat and upper chest, otherwise I get kind of coughy (though, now I think of it, that issue has improved since I started running). Sadly the cowl seems to leave a bit of a gap just there.

That's a lovely lamp in the background. Does it have a proper doily under it?

It's actually a full floor standing lamp, you just can't see it very well because the phone case is in the way. I think the white bit you are looking at is part of the shelves.

That's what happened to me! I eventually ended up giving many of them away to people the scarf felt 'right' for.

I like cowls. And have an impossibly huge collection of scarves and shawls but keep buying more. Funnily enough, when I knitted, I never made any, but am now getting the urge to try. And I have bought a couple of crochet hooks....

I think my issue is that I really use scarves to protect my throat and upper chest. Cowls aren't so good for that. Ravelry is heaving with patterns for scarves, cowls and shawls. I've got more bookmarked than I'll ever do anything sensible with.

I used to have a cowl I wore a lot. It was excellent because you could wear it as either a hood or a scarf, and also it never fell off and got lost like a scarf. Or maybe that's just me.

Cowls have a big advantage over scarves that they never fall off or trail in the mud. On the other hand they leave a chilly hole right in the middle of your throat. I am currently knitting a circular 'ruff' to solve this problem.

Exactly, I think the chilly hole is my problem. Especially as my commute to work involves a cycle ride, so the hood aspects are useless (because of the cycle helmet), while the keeping my throat warm is very useful.

I bought the pattern for this http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dragonscale-collar at a yarn event - looking forward to hooking it as it solves the chilly chest problem (and looks good. I already have the matching mittens. Happy to share!

I love the Dr Who colours of it! Not sure I would have a use for a cowl, though I wore a snood a lot when I was younger :)

It's been interesting seeing everyone's replies. Because I cycle to work, I don't really have so much use for its hood aspects, and my main interest is in protecting my throat which it doesn't really do. It might be fun for leisurely walking at weekends or something though.
