purplecat: The Tardis against a sunset (or possibly sunrise) (Doctor Who)

"You know Doctor Who doesn't show people as stereotypes," NLSS Child observed halfway through this. I tried to figure out why - because the Captain was black? I hazarded.

Turned out it is because Rose is blonde and, so NLSS Child says, "not entirely incompetent".

Glad we got that sorted out then.

I wrote about this pair of episodes quite recently as part of the Randomizer and I don't have a great deal to add. Placed as it is, its prefiguring of Rose's departure is more significant and certainly heightened NLSS Child's anxiety about her. It is also apparent that, now explicitly free of Mickey, Rose does appear more emotionally invested in the Doctor.

It's a nice pair of episodes. I still think it is a little muddled about the relationship between it's beast, human weakness and temptation but that is a minor quibble for a story with lots of atmosphere, fairly tight plotting and a sense of its place in the season arc.

I wasn't greatly impressed at the time, but perhaps they are worthy of a revisit.
