purplecat: The Tardis against a sunset (or possibly sunrise) (Doctor Who)

Four more Doctor Who companion outfits for your delectation and delight! Outfits selected by a mixture of ones I, personally, like; lists on the internet; and a certain random element.

Selection of images of Romana's outfit from The Creature from the Pit. A long floaty white dress with pink shading at the bottom. It is gathered at the waist by a pink beaded boddice laced at the front. The sleeves are elasticated wiht long cuffs with pink shading at the end. Silver boots. White hairband.

Romana in The Creature from the Pit Lalla Ward apparently disliked this outfit. I like it, but it is very obviously designed with Mary Tamm in mind who looked great in long flowing white outfits where Lalla Ward's preference was clearly for more tailored fits.

Selection of images of Zoe's outfit from the Space Pirates. A pale/white leotard shaped like shorts at the leg that is zipped up the front with a black zip with a circular decorative tab. It has black detailing on the seems and the edges at the sleeves. Over this is a short jacket in a simlar style. The overall effect is of white panels with black edging. Black boots.

Zoe in The Space Pirates I like the geometric effect of this outfit.

Selection of images of Steven's outfit from The Time Meddlar. Black trousers and a black polo neck with a long black cloak over the top.

Steven in The Time Meddlar There is a famous shot of Steven in this outfit, framed against the sky holding the edges of the cloak up like wings - sadly I couldn't find a version of it that would fit in the collage. The cloak makes the outfit, obviously and I'm sure would have allowed Steven to seamlessly blend in to the Northumbria of 1066.

Selection of images of Zoe's outfit from The Five Doctors. Blue leotard and leggings with blue boots. Over the top a tunic made of bubble wrap with a brown belt.

Zoe from The Five Doctors I'm completely torn between thinking it was genius move to decide to put Zoe in bubble wrap as a "homage" to her 1960s futurism look when, presumably, the costume budget for the Five Doctors ran out and thinking "oh come on, even on thruppence you can do better than that!"

I see what you mean on that bubble wrap costume, but also, it is Exactly! the production values I associate with Doctor Who, and thus I adore it unreasonably.

The Mad Magazine parody of Dr Who in the Sarah Jane era mentioned monsters made out of bubble wrap looking very like the monsters made out of bubble wrap they'd met on another planet, with Sarah saying something like "What does this mean, Doctor?"

To which the reply was on the lines of "It means the BBC are short of money again - watch out for Wombles!"

I wouldn't wear it myself but I went for Zoe's. Romana's outfit is nice, but as you say it's so a Mary Tamm outfit.

I like almost all of Zoe's outfits. They tend to be fun and very futuristic in a 1960s way and what she's wearing in the Space Pirates is a great example. Her outfit in the Five Doctors is just sad in comparison. I seem to remember reading she was visibly pregnant at the time and that the outfit was designed to obscure this. It might not be true, but it's certainly a very UN-revealing outfit!
