Doctor Who Costume Bracket: Round 1, Post 1

I've had this project on the go for a while. A play off of companion outfits from Doctor Who up to the end of the Jodie Whitaker era. To be honest, I got a bit carried away making these, so posting will go on for a while and in Round one we will be chosing one from four. Maybe in round 2 we'll go down to one in two!

The definition of companion is "who I think is a companion" - therefore Sara Kingdom counts and Mickey Smith and River Song don't!

I'd announce a posting schedule, but we all know I wouldn't stick to it, so these will appear randomly but, hopefully, frequently with the aim of having a winner some time this decade.

Here are the first four Doctor Who companion outfits for your delectation and delight! Outfits selected by a mixture of ones I, personally, like; lists on the internet; and a certain random element.






Romana in Full Circle The second Romana had many great costumes. This one is a bit more flowing and less trim than some!




Dan from the first three Flux episodes Dan's costumes, like many of the Chibnall era, are quite dull. Mostly they are variations on a theme of practical jeans and a shirt. Anyone would think he was a normal person!




Sarah from the Masque of Mandragora Before making these I'd missed that Sarah sometimes seemed to dress in things reminiscient of the Clothkits outfits my mother used to make.




Peri from Mindwarp This was a choice from the random process. Peri had mixed luck with outfits and I'd rate this one as middling.

I went for Peri, it was a close call with Romana, I decided I didn't like the skirt length.

I don't think it's Romana's best outfit, but I have to confess I'm not keen on that one of Peri's (though it's doing quite well in the voting).

Ditto, though for me it was more nostalgia for that particular era of fashion the Peri is wearing that decided me.

Oh this is interesting. I am with you on Sarah Kingdom - and River was a wife & equal, not a companion - but why disqualify Mickey?

Well partly because I don't want to have to deal with the issue of Noel Clarke (is he or isn't he a sexual harasser? The Guardian article has been ruled defamatory but we all know how difficult it is to evidence that something is harassment as opposed to an unfortunate remark being interpreted badly - and that was an awful lot of women to line up to say they had been harassed).

But I'm pretty sure it's mostly a matter of a mixture of framing plus fandom received wisdom. Sara Kingdom is a companion because she is named as such in The Making of Doctor Who. Mickey is not because it was pretty clear from the moment he stepped on the Tardis that his function was to briefly alter the dynamic between the Doctor and Rose before absenting himself. Adam isn't a companion either for pretty much the same reason.

Oh yes! Jack counts, though he doesn't have a huge number of outfits in the set.

Love this idea! I had to vote for Romana (iconic in red) but I was tempted towards Mindwarp--it's definitely one of the ones where Peri's dress sense is very believable. (80s, but believable.)

The Romana outfit is my favourite of this batch - though I don't think it's her best.

For me it's a really close call between Romana and Sarah here, but I'm going for Romana.

After a slow start, the Sarah outfit is doing well, but not well enough to beat Romana, I think.
