Three comic panels. In the first a Dalek confronts two teenagers - a boy and girl - John and Gillian for those who know. John says `How on Earth did it get into the Tardis? The Doctor was the only other person aboard when we started!...' In the second the Dalek top has lifted to reveal the second Doctor. He says `... no need to worry children! it's only me!' to which John replies `Phew!... What a relief!'. In the final panel the Doctor is climbing out of the Tardis helped by John. `What do you think of my home-made Dalek?' he asks. `It fooled me! It looks just like the real thing!' says John.

One of the interesting things about the 1960s Dr Who comics was the decision to age up the grand-children, John and Gillian, from the first Doctor comics into teenagers in the second Doctor comics. Sadly, mostly, I've never found the actual stories that engaging nor really felt the vague suggestion that there were proto-arcs across the stories that convincing.

There's someone on Mastadon currently reading their way through them. They seem mostly to be struck by how violent the Doctor is and how often the resolution involves him shooting something or blowing it up.

Those early DW are... something.

Of all the ones I read, there was only one or two that were engaging, or a couple of panels I thought were nice (the art is awful overall, poor Billy Hartnell looks like a gorilla).

Though the floating Third Doctor one is amusing. And so is the Brigadier with his yacht!

There are a run of third Doctor ones which I think have really nice art, though, it has to be said, I'm not much of a graphic novel person - I don't have the knack of reading images somehow.

I don't think I've ever actually encountered the comics. Not sure if that is an age or a 'they didn't make it to Australia' thing.

Doctor Who magazine had an offshoot called Classic Comics in the 1990s which reprinted lots of them and that's where I've got them from mostly. Wikipedia describes TV Comic where they appeared as a British publication so I imagine it wasn't published in Australia.

I recall Gary Gillatt having fun with the second Doctor's "Die, hideous creature, die!" line when shooting a giant spider with his ray gun in his Doctor Who: From A to Z book.

It's interesting, in a way, that the Doctor Who Target Book Club podcast identified the Second Doctor as particularly untroubled by wiping out large groups of Ice Warriors/Cybermen/Dominators/Krotons in a way they felt was less typical of other Doctors. I'm not convinced the critique really stands up to close examination but it's possibly true that the era was more focused on pulpy sci-fi "wipe out the alien invaders" style tropes than other eras have been.

Yes, I've heard that argument before too. I don't think it entirely stands up either (I think I dealt with it in the book I wrote!), but it's true that Troughton era aliens tend to be "monsters" in a way that Pertwee era aliens (for example) do not.

Agreed, Troughton's stories do not, in general, encourage much thought about the extent to which villains/monsters deserve their comeuppance.

That said, there's a Troughton story (The Underwater Menace) where the Doctor and co encourage the monsters to strike for better pay and conditions. Even Eccleston didn't go that far.
