Ray is a companion that never was. The production team have explicitly said they were choosing between her and Ace as the next companion. While Ace was amazing, I often think Ray would have been great as well, bringing more of a mechanical mindset to the companion role than Ace's more warrior-like character (even though Ray is holding a gun in the above publicity still).

I'd have been interested to see what they did with a companion with a bunch of spanners and so on in her bag. It would have been rather different I think, but still a change from the 1980s companions from the Saward era.

I think Sophie Aldred originally auditioned for Ray, so it's possible that if Ray was the companion she'd still have been played by Sophie, with someone else playing Ace in the next story.

I feel weirdly this means there is a universe in which Ray played by Sara Griffiths is the companion, one where Ray played by Sophie Aldred is the companion and, presumably, one where Ace played by Sara Griffiths is the companion.

At the time it was my favourite story of the season. I was disappointed when I last rewatched though - the chase sequence really outstays its welcome and while you can get away with episode 3 being an extended chase in a 4 episode story, its a bit feeble for a three parter.
