purplecatIn the 1970s Wheetabix ran a promotion in which four parts of a Dr Who board game appeared on the backs of various packets with additional "encounter cards" as inserts on the inside. We didn't eat Wheetabix but we (or my parents) had friends who did and so we had two parts of the board game (and a duplicate of one of them) plus three sets of cards. You could still play the game with just a few parts and I still have all the bits in a box.
Fast forward to 2010 and the launch of the impressive fanzine Vworp Vworp. I got given issue 2 for my birthday complete with the enclosed "Vworpabix" game. This included modern updatings of all four board parts but for some reason only three sets of encounter cards (fortunately I had the original Wheetabix game to hand for cannibalisation).
It took me a month, mind you, to persuade the family that they wanted to play it. It's a standard roll-the-dice-do-what-it-says-on-the-square type game, with several squares that force you to remain there until a certain number is rolled. I got caught in the gaze of a weeping angel until I rolled a six, B. was trapped by Davros until he rolled a three and G. got stuck in thickish shrubbery until she rolled a five, enabling B to race up on the inside. However G. escaped from the shrubbery in the nick of time and romped home to victory.
The Christopher Eccleston counters, it must be said, were cannibalised from a different game.

Date: 2011-12-30 12:05 pm (UTC)I don't know where they are now, but I had at least most parts of the Weetabix game. I remember the different parts fitting together and some of the monsters from before my time as a fan. (There's probably a gap of at least 15 years between me having a little cardboard Axon and actually seeing The Claws of Axos.)
Of course back in those days, a boardgame that came free with a breakfast cereal is the closest most of us came to seeing old episodes...
