11 miles + a 3.5 mile detour to Vindolanda. The feet are much better, though our legs are becoming increasingly stiff. In the above B. can be seen admiring the latrines at Housesteads (particularly impressed by the rainwater sluicing mechanism) and approaching Sycamore Gap star (or so the Internet informs us) of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves though neither of us recalls the film clearly enough to be certain - I'm certainly not certain it starred in the infamous Dover to Nottingham via Hadrian's Wall scene.

Thanks for the pics. The bottom one just makes me want to hike over the hill to see where the wall leads ... I am good for three miles hiking daily, ha, so I guess this would take me days and days to hike. :S

The whole walk would take a while, but the most dramatic bits are between Chesters Fort and Birdoswald fort which is around 15 miles (albeit with a lot of up and down)...

Yay! I visited there with school. I think when we went there was a barbed wire fence and we weren't allowed to walk on the wall. Still got the pencil: used it today.

I think it's the part of the long walk to Nottingham:) And there may have been climbing up the tree.

It was quite odd. The guide book we had was quite clear on the subject of "no climbing on the wall" apart from a short stretch near Housesteads fort and yet there weren't any actual signs that we could see on the wall itself.

Everyone agrees its definitely the bit in Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves - I just have no recollection of the tree - possibly we should rewatch the movie.

Perhaps they expect teachers to keep control and everyone else to be responsible and not walk on it. Kevin Costner was allowed!

I haven't seen it for ages either but it's on telly often enough.

There are some lovely photos of that tree, it has graced many a postcard and painting hereabouts!

It was indeed in Robin Hood, and gave rise to a great deal of mockery of Hollywood's somewhat dubious grasp of British geography.

I remember clearly the very obvious placement of Hadrian's Wall somewhere in Nottinghamshire, but I've no memory of that tree at all!!!
