I liked Hide while feeling vaguely embarrassed about the fact.

Moffat's dislike for killing characters is a refreshing change after the 26 years of original Who, but there are times when the desire to give everyone a happy ending feels a bit mawkish and sentimental. Not to mention overly neat and tidy. Obviously Moffat didn't write this, but I suspect his own preferences have considerable influence over the scripts.

I thought Hide was nicely filmed and acted. The characters of Alex Palmer and Emma Grayling both managed to be engaging while not being as bouncy and open as a lot of Who's characters tend to be. I was pleased that their's was not a doomed romance and that Emma didn't end up as a damsel-in-distress or sacrificial victim. But... but... I think I was beginning to get a little over-saccharined when Hila was revealed to be their descendent (because, seriously, pulease) and then when it was revealed that the mysterious lurking monsters were just star-crossed lovers it somehow tipped over into the ridiculous.

It also suspect that much of the previous wierdness probably doesn't make a lot of sense in the light of this revelation. I note that Cross, the writer, has said he wanted to write a good old-fashioned scary Doctor Who episode and I think, in that, he succeeded. He also managed to produce something that didn't feel overly constrained by its length which is beginning to be a bit of a novelty. At the end of the day though, I don't think it had quite the bite that is necessary.

Yeah think the last 5-10 minutes killed it quite completely. Up till there, it was properly tense and scary (embarrassed to say I jumped a few times), but then it became what feels like the second or third "resolved by feels" episode this season and *sigh*
