There were a lot of people from DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) at iSAIRAS. I spent some time with a group who were working on the "DLR Crawler" which, apparently, has been cobbled together out of the "DLR Hand". I had high hopes of this, with visions of this disembodied hand crawling about on the surface of Mars. In reality, the DLR Crawler looks a lot less like a hand than you might expect.

They were looking at the use of stereoscopic vision to make assessments of the roughness of any terrain the crawler had to traverse and plan a route and modify its gait accordingly.

I have to say, it looks a bit like something out of Bamzooki/Robot Wars. A whole new perspective on Spiders from Mars :)

DLR Hand does give a mental image of Thing from the Addams Family scuttling about on the martian surface ...

How do these vary from the crawler thing that got sent to Mars and never came home (the one involving the guy from the OU with the Bristol accent -- I'm blanking on his name! Colin something?)

I think it had wheels didn't it? Legs potentially get you over more difficult terrain but bring with them a host of hard control problems.
