LJ Reliability
Jan. 6th, 2009 01:33 pmHmmm... so there's a rumour of sorts doing the rounds that can be summarised as LJ is likely to become unreliable shortly and vanish in due course.
I'll admit to a certain dark amusement at the thought of bringing LJ (and possibly places like LJ Book) down simply by engendering a round of panic-stricken backing up (NB. More strictly backuppy services exist than LJ Book, I just like turning my LJ into a book once a year - some alternative back up tools are linked to in the rumour post above and its comments) however I would hate to be the person sitting there smugly going "didn't you know?" so I'm passing on the rumour and leave it to you, gentle reader, to decide the level of panic that is appropriate.

Date: 2009-01-06 02:07 pm (UTC)Interesting. I saw this over on Journalfen, and have spent the last hour creating and customising an alternative on insane journal. I did that ages ago on greatest journal and it, of course, fell over. *headdesk*
I've never backed up my lj, but I'll be doing that in the next few days. I can't see LJ just disappearing overnight, but - what with sacking some of their engineers - I can envision connectability problems in the future.

Date: 2009-01-06 04:19 pm (UTC)*sigh* I loathe uncertainty, and I have way, way too many friends here to want to lose this sort of set up.
We need a back-up plan. *serious nod*

Date: 2009-01-06 04:41 pm (UTC)I've found tools that will let you post to several journals at once - so you could mirror, personally, your own journal on LJ and IJ but I can't see how to get a community to cross post, as it were, without getting everyone in it to use a new tool. Your best bet is to back denial up regularly (e.g. once a month) and then import it into a new journal. You might lose up to a month's posts that way but you won't lose it all - if LJ does go down, though, all the links to people's personal journals will go whatever you do....
Anyway
This seems to be a useful post summarising posts about back up and moving procedures
Assuming its easy to use, this post describes what looks like the best system for transferring an entire journal or community to a new host
And this seems to be a way to post to multiple journals at once

Date: 2009-01-06 04:52 pm (UTC)On a personal level, I've had an Insane Journal for a while, just so I can comment on people who link back to there, particularly joereaves when she posts via there.
In the space of the last 10 minutes, I have loaded my first 4 fics manually, and it is amazingly quick to do, just by copying and pasting the original LJ entry, and all you have to do is type the heading and the tags. I could probably have ALL my stuff there with about 2 hours work. I think that's worth the time and effort. I don't know if there would be a way of importing that takes comments over as well, as it would be a shame to lose all the feedback, but that would be fairly small, in the great scheme of things.
IJ seems to be the best bet so far, so I'm going to continue with it as a backup.
We can always set up a new Denial Comm there just in case, and encourage cross-posting, or at least just publicise it, in case we need an exit strategy.

Date: 2009-01-06 05:02 pm (UTC)I very rarely make personal posts, so it's just the fic really, and I have a total word back up of all that.
But it seems to be so quick to transfer over manually, that I probably will complete this exercise.
Would you set up a journal over there, just in case?

Date: 2009-01-07 02:15 am (UTC)I backed up my LJ last night, using ljarchive and it had everything backed up, including comments in under 5 minutes.
If you want, I can email you the exe file for ljarchive, or if you want to wait, I can let you know how migrating my LJ to IJ goes...
