So freecycle sounds like this really great idea - you email that you have something available, free to a good home, someone comes and collects it, everyone is happy.

A week ago I listed a bag of children's clothes and an old bicycle. Lots of interest in both. Both are still in my possession and I have three times now sat at home waiting for someone to collect who completely failed to show up at the appointed time.

There is some chance the bicycle may go on Tuesday but I think the clothes will be going in the "send to Africa" box next time we're at the recycling centre.

I've not tried Freecycle myself, though lots of people mention it as a positive thing, and some people I know have obtained furniture through it.

We tried to register for it in Bristol and never got a response to the bloody request, so we gave up!

There seem to be three competing systems in Manchester, which doesn't help. But the degree of "ooh! shiny!" followed by deafening silence I've had to deal with in the past week is surprising.

B. gets rid of things through it quite often and never seems to have trouble. But I've been messed around a lot in the past 7 days and am feeling quite disenchanted.

I wonder if location makes a difference, or possibly what you're offering. When we were in deepest rural Oxfordshire, I successfully recycled loads of stuff, especially old desks and computer equipment. When we moved to C. I tried to shift some old general furniture and had no takers. Also, more students use it here (who - massive generalised stereotype - are probably flakier) whereas in Oxon it was mostly families.

I still have vague hopes of offloading the bicycle, though the current taker apparently only checks email once a week, has trouble following instructions and can't remember phone numbers.

The clothes go to Africa next time I remember to have them with me at the supermarket.
