TBH, I did wonder about some of the historical Carry On's but I still think The Romans plays most of Ian's story straight, and most of Barbara's until she actually meets Nero and that creates an odd juxtaposition with the more farcical elements.
Though, I also think, its major problem is it is easy to underestimate how skilled the Carry On team actually were (and even they produced a fair few clunkers).
