Trump’s joke about "Second Amendment people" was targeting gun owners, too.
A lot of nonsense has been written about Trump's "second ammendment people" remark. I mean it's obviously not something a cautious and thoughtful politician would have said but that's kind of the point of Trump. However this analysis is interesting.

Not sure I agree about Trump insulting the gun lobby, but the article does highlight something I've been thinking recently about Trump not being a typical US conservative politician: his sexual jokes and support for abortion alienate him from the religious right; his support for protectionist tariffs separate him from the economic libertarians; his foreign policy isolationism (some of the time at least) separates him from the neo-conservative interventionists. And then there's his historic support for the Clintons! It's no surprise he's alienated a lot of senior Republicans. I just hope he alienates most of the electorate before November...

He's been getting *much* more conservative on abortion lately in an attempt to get religious right support (going a bit farther than they wanted when he suggested criminal prosecution of women who have abortions, who they claim are victims of evil satanic physicians who need to be rescued)

Insofar as Trump is anything politically coherent, I would suspect him of being a libertarian and so probably having no real interest in abortion as an issue per se. I'm not surprised, as a result, that he's finding the fairly convoluted waters of the anti-abortion lobby difficult to navigate.

There was another interesting article I read (which I forgot to bookmark) about how in lots of ways Trump acts like a Machine Learning algorithm with a biased Training data set. He says something - if twitter or the crowd at a rally react to it, he doubles down on what he said, if they don't he doesn't go there again. His own opinions are completely irrelevant to his behaviour.

Given some actions/words before he embarked on this politics thing I think it is possible to interpret that remark not as an intentional insult to the gun lobby but as a moment when some of his actual opinion leaked through.

I've also seen articles that suggest Trump has no interior life at all, but I kind of doubt that.

However I think there is definite truth in the idea that his policies are based heavily on crowd feeback, which is why they appear so incoherent and inconsistent and, as you point out, atypical of any of the "standard lines" for republicans.

Interesting idea about Trump the machine learning algorithm. It's possible that Trump sees getting to the White House as his only goal - the latest in series of glittering prizes - and isn't too worried about what he'll do if he gets there.

I'm pretty sure he's more concerned with the getting there than what to do with it. There was a weird article claiming his team phone Join Kasich (I think) offering to make him the most powerful VP in history, in charge of both domestic and foreign affairs. When Kasich asked what Trump would be doing he was told "making America great again".

I've no idea if its true, but it does sum up a sense I have that Trump is less interested in running a country than in being President of one.

I half wish it had managed to include something of the second half of the novel and the elaborate environment of Radch space - but I'm amazed they managed to find material for as much as they did!
