Apologies for non-response to comments on recents posts - I've been at a conference.

Reading: Finished Myth-Understandings which was ultimately a lot better than the first story (and the previous anthology from NewCon Press) suggested. Started Nothing O'Clock a short Doctor Who story by Neil Gaiman. Impression so far: nice start but suffers (as much NuWho fiction) from heavy-handed young-adultism.

Listening: The jury is still out on the Fangirl Happy Hour though I'm enjoying a mobile phone game they recommended so that is points in their favour.

Watching: I bought us both the first series of The Librarians and the TV movies (TV movies yet to arrive) as a consolation present following the EU referendum. We watched the first episode last night. It's definitely cheesier than Warehouse 13. Jury also still out.

What is The Librarians? As a librarian, I'm intrigued! The Wikipedia article is a bit vague.

There are two shows and they sometimes get conflated. There was a short-lived comedy series based in a library, back int he 80s or 90s. There's the newer show based on some TV movies from the 00s where "The Library" is a repository of much of the magic in the world and The Librarian is an Indiana Jones-style adventurer who goes out to collect them. Light and fluffy escapist TV with attempts at humour, some of which fall a little flat, some of which work (for me, anyway).

The movies are currently making their slow way towards us. I'm quite looking forward to them since I'm expecting a high cheese factor there. The cheesiness here took me aback slightly since I'd somehow imagined it would be less so.

Well, based on the viewing of a single double-episode. The premise is that there is a magical library which contains the last remnants of magic in the world (apart from the bits it doesn't contain) and there is a Librarian who goes around collecting magical items to keep in the library.

It is at this point, in all shows with this rough premise, that B. starts complaining loudly about why these things have to be locked up and why they should not be publicly revealed, discussed and researched.

At the end of episode two the library has itself become somewhat inaccessible (exactly what that means is unclear), the Librarian has gone off to find it, leaving behind three recently recruited trainee librarians - a synesthete who seems to be being coded as the Maths/Sciencey one, a top end thief, and a cowboy. The cowboy appears to have the least to contribute here but given he's the white conventionally handsome male, it may turn out he's supposed to be the main protagonist though so far the show hasn't particularly gone down that route. All three trainee librarians are full of vast amounts of random general knowledge. They have a female ex-special forces "guardian" to provide muscle and an elderly researcher character who is familiar with the small part of the library they still have access to. I'm fairly sure that from here each episode will be formatted around some ancient artefact popping up (in the library's convenient magical "clippings" book) at which point the three trainee librarians and the guardian will be dispatched by the elderly researcher character to go and collect it. High-jinks will ensue.

I'm not sure therefore that the Librarians are particularly librariany beyond knowing lots of stuff, but the show has potential in a team dominated by characters who are there for their knowledge rather than their muscles (come to think of it, possibly the cowboy's role is going to be back-up muscle).

As I say, it was a little cheesier than I was expecting (though that isn't necessarily a bad thing) and I feel its a little ominous that I can't actually remember any of the character's names at this point (and there was random out of the blue kissing at the end of episode 2 which suggested that there was more character work going on inside the writers' heads than was making it into the scripts) but I've not seen any episodes yet in what I assume will be its regular format.

Is it aimed at families or adults? I found it hard to tell from the synopsis.

(I now realize I don't have a proper librarianship userpic, so my college will have to do, even though it is not obvious that the library is in shot.)

Based on the two episodes I've seen, I'd say it was aimed at families.
