purplecatThis episode shares much, I think, with Robot of Sherwood. It is, essentially, a fairly light-hearted piece aping a particular genre. There is less meat to this episode than there was to Robot of Sherwood and less light-heartedness, but at the same time it seemed more self-assured as if this particular production/acting team is settling into its role.
No-longer-so-small child agreed to join us again for this episode after being reassured that it wouldn't be scary and having had the concept of a "caper movie" explained to her. She quite enjoyed it but about half an hour after the fact was asking a number of rather probing questions about the plot set-up that I couldn't necessarily answer. At least, I could make up answers that seemed plausible but a rewatch would be required to see if my answers are correct. One of the story's weaknesses is definitely not making it entirely clear why the Doctor needed quite such a convoluted plot to get into the vault. No-longer-so-small child was also very smug that she instantly deduced that the "disintegrators" were, in fact, teleporters.
Capaldi and Coleman were good once again, and the scripts continue to give Clara more to do than previously. That said, no-longer-so-small child was never convinced by any of my explanations for why Clara was tagging along. Jonathan Bailey's Psi was also very good but Pippa Bennett-Warner's Saibra felt rather under-used to me. I also wasn't convinced by Karabraxos' change of heart at the end, but given we are being led to assume she is playing a long game*, maybe this will be resolved.
*EDIT: Though I've just realised she's a different character from Missy though, nevertheless, presumably the one who gave Clara the Doctor's phone number. In short, I've no idea.
I suspect if I watched this again I would consider it a slickly done episode, but ultimately a bit contentless.
