The Interstellar Song Contest
Aug. 5th, 2025 07:07 pmDoctor Who meets the Eurovision Song Contest seems like such an RTD idea that I'm surprised it took him this long to get around to it. Although, one could argue, that it's only now he's reached the point where he's prepared to greenlight an idea simply because it amuses him and not worry about the consequences.
The Interstellar Song Contest knew that it was supposed to deliver some kitchy, camp fun, laughing with but not at the foibles of Eurovision. I think it must be over forty years since I actually sat through Eurovision. I'm not really in a position, therefore, to say whether The Interstellar Song Contest actually delivered - it mostly felt like it did from where I was watching. The only part that seemed out of sync with the mood of was the Doctor's torture of Kid at the end. That felt not only out of character for the piece but also for the Fifteenth Doctor who has otherwise been portrayed as an incarnation more at peace with his history. The final resolution was also weak, but given the story probably had to try to solve the solar system's problems through the power of song, it was hamstrung by it's own format. A wiser writer might not have tried to layer in an allegory to Palestine there, but then a wiser writer would also have been a less ambitious one.
I was delighted that Susan turned up and even more delighted when the Rani also put in an appearance in the middle of me explaining to B. how it was never Susan or the Rani. I enjoyed it. It was meant to be a moment of lightness before the finale and mostly succeeded.
