purplecat: The Tardis against a sunset (or possibly sunrise) (Doctor Who)
[personal profile] purplecat
Two Doctor Who companion outfits for your delectation and delight! Outfits selected by a mixture of ones I, personally, like; lists on the internet; and a certain random element.

My feeling is that these are both iconic costumes but not, perhaps, in the absolute top tier. I'm interested to see which makes it through to round 4.

Selection of images of Leela's outfit from The Face of Evil and several other stories. Brown knee-length leather boots. A brown leather leaotard that looks as if it is stitched together with large red stitiches from vertical strips of leather. A leather belt/skirt which has a long piece hanging down the front and a shorter piece at the side. It has openings at the hips where a leather pouch and dagger sheath are mounted on a belt. It is low cut at the back with two pieces of red string going up the middle of the back to attach at the shoulders.

Selection of images of Dodo's outfit from The Celestial Toymaker. A red peaked cap. A sleeveless dress with a red top with a black circle in the middle and a black skirt with a pattern of red circles.

While Dodo's outfit is lots of fun it just can't beat Leela's iconic leathers!

? IMHO you'd be hard pressed to find a more [Classic Who] iconic outfit than Leela's.

Like, before I had delved into Classic Who in any detail I had heard of Leela and her outfit. I hadn't even heard Dodo's name. (Not Dodo's fault. But fandom gravitates towards the iconic. And hey, maybe more people *like* Dodo's style...)

I think you could argue that Dodo's outfit here is, at the very least, the most iconic from the First Doctor era.
Oh it most definitely stands out (and seeing it in colour is great). But Average Fan who hasn't watched much (if any) Classic Who, will probably be more aware of Leela than Dodo.

Dodo's just looks like an everyday dress to me. Which might be fashion catching up with the show, but it means that it doesn't really hit as a costume. While Leela's is one that I remember really strongly, despite possibly only having seen a small number of episodes of those stories (I believe Who was showing M-F, but I only saw it whichever day we were at a family friend's, which was usually one day per week).
