I know Nation and Davis pitched to get the series. I do find it hard to see what their version of the series would really have had to offer (and this from someone who likes a lot of Nation's work, including Blake's 7). I think their vision for the series would be too narrow, and pitched too much at eight year old boys. I think the success of Blake's 7 came from the creative tension between Nation's and Boucher's visions of the show.
Much like Sydney Newman's pitch/suggestions for change - I suspect there would have been a lot of "looking back". Even when things have manifestly "gone wrong" with Doctor Who, I think it needs to be responsive to the times and not be attempting to recapture some golden age.
