I used a pattern - though it was really simple, just crochet up a big rectangle, fold in half and then seam the sides leaving armholes at the top. I'm amazed it works really because you'd have though, being just a big rectangle folded in half that it would bunch strangely at the neck and the hips but it doesn't seem to.
