I think Eldrad's evil nature was fairly well-signposted. Certainly I would say Baker plays his interactions with her as a case of giving the benefit of the doubt (but well-prepared for it not to work out), certainly he seems strongly motivated by a desire to get her off the Earth. But with a different lead-in she definitely had companion potential.
