I used a pattern - though it was really simple, just crochet up a big rectangle, fold in half and then seam the sides leaving armholes at the top. I'm amazed it works really because you'd have though, being just a big rectangle folded in half that it would bunch strangely at the neck and the hips but it doesn't seem to.

That's interesting! Yes, I would have expected at least the neck to be odd. But nice that it works! I'll try that.

The crochet stitch used did involve crocheting in back loops only, which created the ridged effect and also seems to have made it stretchier somehow, which possibly helps explain why the simple shape works. It's a free pattern though I think you have to sign up to the Lion Brand website to get it (here)

It's two different sorts of variegated yarn - hence the stripes of stripes look!
