It must be said, my first thought was Orac. There was obviously a point in the 1960s and 70s when we thought the future of tech would be perspex boxes.
60s futurism was giant tape reels, 70s was perspex, and old Doctor Who was ahead of the zeitgeist surprisingly often. Trendsetting skiffy, again surprisingly (but relatively consistently - from the theme tune onwards).
The perspex-box-with-tubes aethetic also reminds me of the mouse house in H2G2, obv, although I presume all but the most futuristic mice were still in wire and metal when Adams first dreamed it up? (I am viral and can't be arsed to check dates for mass produced pet accessories.)
