The recording of "Doctor in Distress" (from the back of DWM 101) because, obviously, if an idea is appropriate for raising money for the starving in Ethiopia it is equally appropriate for protesting BBC decisions about which shows it wants to make.

A distasteful episode which made all concerned look silly, and then point fingers at each other saying it was someone else's idea.

I have sympathy with Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant and Anthony Ainley all of whom, presumably, were asked specifically by JNT to take part.

What bemuses me slightly is the pre-eminence given to Faith Brown in all the publicity (presumably at JNT's behest) who I had not heard of at the time, and haven't since, compared to members of Bucks Fizz and Ultravox who I was aware of.

But yes, sympathy for regular cast members aside. It makes everyone who participated entirely voluntarily look silly.

I should have been more specific about the finger-pointing - I was largely thinking of the instigators. The Faith Brown angle is interesting - I'd not thought about it but you are right; she came from the area of LE with which JN-T was most comfortable, I think.

It's not even a good song. Although it appears on the Trial DVD box set as an extra, which shows how the politics have moved on. Years ago someone dissected the lyrics in DWM. Some of them are quite amusing (inadvertently). I think there's a line about "We've come to accept six Doctors" - not to like or love or adore, but merely - even grudgingly - to accept. That's classic self-hating mid-eighties Who fandom.

It's certainly a sign of some very confused thinking on the part of the production team. I guess, possibly, if it had been a runaway chart success that might have exerted some pressure on the BBC but that was always going to be vanishingly unlikely, so you are left with the bizarre notion that the existence of a record sung by a handful of B/C-list celebrities and bought by a handful of die-hard fans can somehow exert pressure.

I suppose its possible JNT just saw it as a mechanism for keeping Doctor Who in the newspapers and believed that to be a good in and of itself.
