Crocodile Scarf

Mum very much admired my Crocodile Shawl so I made her this scarf version as a Christmas present

Since I made up the pattern for this, I may as well freely distribute it (I'll be putting it on Ravelry as well, assuming that isn't too hard to do)

This uses the crocodile or dragonscale stitch which is a bit hard to describe but there seem to be plenty of youtube tutorials if you go looking which should help give an idea what is going on.

I used three different colours of James C. Brett Marble Chunky wool and a 4.5mm hook. Using UK crochet terms.

Row 1: ch 144 (you need a multiple of 8 chains - so you can adapt the the length of scarf you want)
Row 2: dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end (143 sts)
Row 3: 3ch, 1tr in base of 3ch, *2ch, miss next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts rep from * to last 3 sts, 2ch miss 2sts 2tr in last st. (74 "stalks" in pairs with chains in between)
Row 4: You're going to do something a bit like a five trebles down the first stalk in each pair and then five trebles up the other side, but instead of working the treble into a stitch you're going to work it into the gap between the stalks.

!*Yrh, insert hook from back to front in space between the stalks, yrh, pull through and complete as for a tr rep from * 4 times. 1ch. **yrh, insert hook from back to front in space between stalks but now working on 2nd stalk, yrh, pull through and complete as for a treble rep from** 4 times. Miss next 2tr group, repeat from ! to end of row (19 scales)
Row 5: 3ch, 1tr in top of last tr of scale from previous row, *2ch, 2tr in centre of next scale, 2ch, 2tr in centre of next 2tr group from row 3; rep from * to last scale. 2tr in centre of last scale, 2ch, 2tr in top of last tr of scale from previous row. (76 stalks)
Row 6: As row 4 (20 scales)
Row 7: 2ch, sl st in centre of scale from previous row, 3ch, 1 tr in centre of same scale *2ch, 2tr in centre of next 2tr group from row 3, 2ch, 2tr in centre of next scale; rep from * to last scale. (74 stalks) I often changed yarn for this row in which case I skipped the initial 2ch and just started the yarn with a three chain in the centre of the first scale.
Row 8: Miss first 2tr group, !*Yrh, insert hook from back to front in space between the stalks, yrh, pull through and complete as for a tr rep from * 4 times. 1ch. **yrh, insert hook from back to front in space between stalks but now working on 2nd stalk, yrh, pull through and complete as for a treble rep from** 4 times. Miss next 2tr group, repeat from ! to end of row (19 scales)

Repeat rows 5-8 until you have the desired width.

That's lovely! I hope she was pleased with it.

Having scanned the pattern, I have decided that crotchet is, in fact, rocket science.
