Well I can't claim to be an expert on fossilisation, but my impression is that if it was a different type of silt or whatever then two different types of rock would form that would erode at different rates - hence trackway but I don't actually know and my tame sometimes-digs-up-fossils person is in Japan.

Although I have to ask, how do they know those are trilobite prints? ieditignore the silly question, I spotted the culprit in the pic after I'd posted the comment.
