The Mystery of the 1973 Dr Who Annual Jo Grant Reference Photo(s)

double spread artwork from the start of a story called Dark Intruders. It shows the third Doctor and Jo (with short hair which looks green but is probably intended to be blonde and big round sunglasses framed against a reddish-purple planet. In front of them is a montage of two astronauts and a scene of a splashdown capsule from a rocket afloat on water with the two astronauts being rescued by tow men in a yellow dinghy.

The 1973 Dr Who annual has these rather nice montage artworks at the start of several stories. The woman with green (though it was probably intended to be blonde hair is almost certainly meant to be Jo Grant. It wasn't exactly unusual for companions to look nothing like the actresses that played them in the Dr Who annuals since, as I understand matters, the artists often had no reference material to work from. However I do not believe this to have been the case in 1973.

Black white and purple line drawing. The third Doctor lies unconscious on the ground while a woman in a miniskirt, stripey polo-neck top and a wide belt, with short blonde hair runs towards him. There is also an explosion in the background

So this looks no more like Jo Grant than the picture above - in fact throughout the annual the images of Jo Grant have noticeably shorter hair than Katy Manning had in the show. However weirdly that is almost certainly the top worn by Katy in Colony in Space

Jo Grant and the Doctor in the Console Room in Colony in Space. Jo is wearing a stripey polo-neck top and a wide belt.

I was thinking that it was possible someone had described Jo Grant, rather than supplying an image, for some reason until I noticed that there was one picture of her that does look (at least vaguely like Katy Manning).

A blonde woman with rather longer hair in a stripey polo-neck top. Two slightly ape-like green aliens stand behind her looking puzzled

This image is from "The Monster Game"* so someone definitely had a reference photo from Colony in Space.

*Jo Grant has been captured by some strange monsters from an unknown planet (presumably the green creatures though this is not made clear). It is up to the resourceful Dr Who and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart to find a way of rescuing her as soon as possible. Play this game by joining in the hunt with Dr Who and the Brigadier.

The game is played using a dice and different coloured counters. You must throw a six to start and obey the instructions as you go along. The winner is the first person to reach Jo and rescue her from the monsters. But you must throw a six before you can rescue her.
