Insofar as I can have any opinion of an actor I hadn't heard of before the first rumours started creeping about yesterday morning and who I have never seen in anything, I agree with mondyboy. At first glance he looks like a safe but uninteresting choice.

I don't get the 'looks like David Tennant' thing do you? Tennant is a fineboned skinny Scot. Smith is a heavy-boned guy with a giant nose who looks like he will be seriously craggy and probably quite a big bloke when he's finished growing. His face and body shape looks closer to a young Pertwee to me.

I suppose they are both white and currently have moderately floppy hair...

I'd (very loosely) characterize them as young(ish) and good-looking in a quirky kind of way.

It must be said I'm mostly finding myself of "no opinion" on this one. I'll be waiting to see but not with any great sense of anticipation.

Philmophlegm reckons that the actor is less important than the writing, and I'm inclined to agree with that.

My initial reaction when I saw a photo was Smith was that he looked like someone took Tennant and Eccleston, somehow melded them together (not necessarily in a "best of both" way), and then de-aged the result about 10-12 years.

As for anticipation, I'm with Louise on this one. No opinion yet.
