Costume Bracket: Round 1, Post 54

Four more Doctor Who companion outfits for your delectation and delight! Outfits selected by a mixture of ones I, personally, like; lists on the internet; and a certain random element.

Selection of images of Rose's outfit from New Earth. Black trousers with a pink and purple short-sleeved top with an asymetric design. Over this a blue zip up jacket with a slightly rouched look.

Rose in New Earth I really like this pink top, but I'm less certain about the blue jacket that goes with it.

Selection of images of Barbara's outfit from The Aztecs. A long straight cut dress with a feather poncho. Over this is a feathered full lenght cloak. She is wearing an elaborate headdress with a sunflower like design in feathers at the back. All is in yellows and oranges.

Barbara in The Aztecs This is another early historical where a lot of attention was paid to costume and set design. In this case Barbara's outfit as the reincarnation of the high priest Yetaxa.

Selection of images of Rose's outfit from The Unquiet Dead. A victorian bustled skirt in red satin wiht a black off-the-shoulder bodice. There is black lace at the bottom of the skirt and around the top of the bodice. She has lace up boots and a red flower in her hair. Outdoors she has a black cape.

Rose in The Unquiet Dead I assume this outfit is historically accurate - because BBC - though it's always possible the costume designers were aiming more for what Rose might think Victorian dress looks like. Whatever the case, it's not what I would have chosen for Cardiff in December.

Selection of images of Romana's outfit from The Ribos operation. A long white goan gathered into pleats at the front. Wide sleeves that reach almost to the ground. A headress made from a string of pearls and a floor length white fur coat.

Romana in The Ribos Operation Romana starts as she means to go on in a stunning flowing robe. I don't think she ever wore anything quite as impractical again, but this look defined her.

Much as I love Barbara's fabulous headdress in The Aztecs, I'm voting for Romana anyway. That outfit is so iconic. And the feathery over-thingy with its hood is to die for!
vivdunstan: Part of own photo taken in local university botanic gardens. Tree trunks rise atmospherically, throwing shadows from the sun on the ground. (Default)

Well I was about to vote for Rose in the Victorian frock, then scrolled down and saw Romana. Getting a sense of deja vu here!

I can't remember where Rose and Nine were going in that ep without going to check, but the Doctor got the destination and the year wrong, so it was more appropriate for the original destination, like several other instances in the series(es) across the years!

I had to vote for Barbara and her epic goddess outfit, although Rose's Victorian get up is gorgeous and would probably otherwise have edged out even Romana's white dress.

We are both right - I checked the TARDIS wiki and the Doctor does tell her to change, when they're inside the TARDIS, so she goes to wear something suitable for Naples in 1860, but it's after she changes into that outfit that they go outside and he realises it's Cardiff in 1869.

I've always regarded Romana's costume as her Servalan (Blakes 7) tribute. Servalan, of course, was described as producing "a sexual awakening for a generation of sci-fi fans" in Jacqueline Pearce's obituary, and you'll get no argument from me.

OK, that makes sense - thanks!
scifirenegade: Barbara and Ian laugh in The Romans (barbarian)

Voted Barbara, not because I have a bias or anything (cough) but Jacqueline Hill was fond of the costume and thought the headpiece was lovely (even if difficult to keep on her head).

Three stunning outifts here (the first Rose one is blah). Hard to choose but I went with Barbara because it's the first time I've seen a colour still of that, though I've seen the story a couple of times.
