Indeed. I thought the new trilogy started fairly well, but the second instalment was too dark for me (in terms of it seemed to imply everything our heros did in the first trilogy turned out for the worst), and the third installment just felt like they were making stuff up on the fly based on fan reaction to the second. And yes, the whole thing seemed to be "AND HERE"S AN EVEN BIGGER DEATH STAR" which is forgivable story writing in an 8 year old, but not so much in the script-writing juggernaut that is the Star Wars franchise.
